Oh man, Dragon's Crown is coming out next week and we are SO PSYCHED. Leslie and I are huge Vanillaware fans, and my love of beat 'em ups has to be well-documented by now. Seriously, everything about this game is so unbelievably perfect for us. I wish we were able to stream it just so you guys can watch us power through it. Leslie's already picked the Dwarf as her main, because she loves buff muscle dudes with beards, and I'll be going with Amazon for that high-risk all-reward berserker-style run-in-and-just-punch-shit gameplay.
It's gotten a lot of flak for its character design, which is just sad for us. Leslie and I both love Vanillaware's art design and we absolutely adore the look of each and every character. In a game where EVERY character in its universe is ridiculously proportioned, it's so weird to see one character singled out for her chest, large as it may be. Of course, that character is just as competent and powerful as any of the other playable classes and is just as much of a blank slate as the rest of them. It's sad to see such an awesome looking character be labeled as demeaning simply because she has large tits. Eventually, we're going to need a system of measurement to determine how large boobs can be on characters before they're officially deemed offensive.
Like, shit, there's so many more aspects to the characters that are so great that people are completely ignoring due to a character's chest or hips. Each class is oozing with little details, from the way the Fighter's armor clangs together as he walks, the way the Elf's ears twitch, the pulsating veins of the Dwarf. God, even just the complete subversion of character types. The Amazon is my favorite design of the six, simply because of how different she is from the usual depiction. She's as muscular as the dwarf, is clearly all about fighting, yet is still goddamn gorgeous. The way her hair flows is fucking mesmerizing. Seriously, she's one of the most interesting character designs I've seen in quite awhile.
I could spend forever talking about this game. If you're turned off by the character designs, I implore you to find a way to look past it and look at the even more beautiful picture surrounding it. It's the most wonderful love letter to medieval fantasy I've seen since Dark Souls, and I can't wait to destroy it as a beautiful Amazonian goddess next to my muscular Dwarven girlfriend.
WELP, see you on Sunday!
