326) Thunderous Applause

Page was a little late today because we spent all of last night watching Zack from Unlife stream the P.T. demo. For those unaware, the P.T. demo was a free demo put out by a fake company with no real info about the game itself. As it turned out, though, it was actually a playable teaser for the newest Silent Hill game with Hideo Kojima and Guillermo del Toro heading the creative team.

I can't stress enough how exciting this is for me. I'm a huge fan of Silent Hill and minus the original Team Silent, I can't think of a better fit for Silent Hill than Hideo Kojima. The original goal of Team Silent was to capture the feel of classic American horror movies, and who better than a man so enamored by American cinema? He's that perfect blend of strange, surreal, and goofy that makes Silent Hill what it is. And if the P.T. demo was any indication (even though it says the main game won't be like the demo), he handled horror perfectly. The P.T. demo was fucking great, randomness of the final few triggers aside. It captures that sense of isolation, hopelessness, and surreality perfectly, keeping jumpscares to a minimum and focusing just on making you unsettled. I loved it. I wish I could have played it myself. I'm still trying to hold myself back from going out and buying a PS4 right now to play it.

I've seen a handful of complaints about Kojima's involvement because of the silly things he occasionally puts into previous Metal Gear games. Even people I respect, people engrained into the Silent Hill community are whining that Kojima's a terrible fit, because his games are confusing and dumb and silly and fuck you. Kojima's easily one of the most creative game designers in the industry and has pioneered so much shit. He's kept a single narrative string going on for over 25 years in the Metal Gear games while keeping each iteration fresh and interesting. The odd bikini girl or occasional wonky dialogue doesn't detract from that legacy. Japanese designers in general have been getting a lot of shit recently because of the social justice push, and it just depresses me that this man's genius is lost on so many people because of that. There's no other series quite like Metal Gear and there's no other creator quite like Kojima. If you can't understand what makes those games or Kojima himself special, yet you consider yourself big into video game culture...then, I dunno. You don't sound like a person I'd like to get to know, I guess.

That's all for today. See you on Friday!
